Modern Apologetics is the Frontline of Faith.

There’s a growing hostility toward faith today. Not just skepticism, not just a lack of interest, but outright disdain. Faith can no longer be tolerated as trivial and sentimental. Now that it's part of the culture war, it's a stain on civilization that must be blotted out.

PBS promoted the Bible-as-myth narrative in a series of interviews with "mythologist" Joseph Campbell.

The war on faith is an intentional, well-funded, and organized effort. Critics hurl accusations at the Bible, claiming it's full of contradictions and myths. They don't care if these accusations have any merit. They're not looking for an honest debate or theological insight. Their goal is to scandalize and mock faith into obscurity. Their goal is to create an avalanche of lies that buries the biblical world view so deep that it will never resurrect.

The critics are no longer satisfied with the security of their own opinions. They need to intervene, re-educate, and impose their views. It's okay if you want to cling to some traditions from the past. It's okay if you are a double-minded and confused Christian. However, you must eventually accept what's obvious; all causation is natural. Therefore the biblical world view is wrong, and should be uprooted from your thought process.

"God is dead"; the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche has become an icon of the anti-biblical worldview.

And to some extent the war on faith has been successful. Many smart people have come to associate faith with irrationality, fantasy, and emotional manipulation. Christianity is seen as a counter-intellectual vestige of the past. Churches are places where you might go for emotional support and uplifting feelings, not answers. The biblical worldview, once a cornerstone of western civilization, is barely alive.

Christiandom rots from within.

It's an obvious truth; a divided house can't stand. Christianity today is fractured and collapsing under the weight of its own contradictions. Constant infighting and theological impasse have made it frail. Too often believers are in a circular firing squad, more concerned with vindication than growth. The reality is that many Christians prefer a calm secular concensus to the smugness and even absurdity they find amongst each other.

And how should we manage this division? Some say the solution is to be more tolerant, and polite. We should not have biblical discussions, and if they do occur then we must find common ground. There's no risk, but then there's no benefit. Others take the opposite view that we should speak louder, push harder, and overcome those who disagree. Of course this leads only to more noise and division.

The Bible lies at the heart of this struggle. Some call it God’s revelation, others call it a collection of tales. Many strive to unveil its meaning, yet our flesh minds can't ponder its depths. It's been said that there are lies, dirty lies, and statistics, but even worse has been the twisting of Bible verses. False teachers have become skillful at using the Bible to deceive, because for them the Bible is a tool to manipulate the simple-minded.

"And in covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you..." (2 Peter 2:3 ASV)

The answer is that we need real leadership. We need shepherds with genuine and mature faith, and elders who can discern truth from lies. Yet, if God sent leaders would the masses listen? Isn't it the people who choose the prosperity peddlers who turn them into merchandise? Isn't it the people who demand a safe space of platitudes so their assumptions can't be challenged? We get what we support, and now the common choices are banal boredom or pretentious theater.

“The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few...” (Luke 10:2 KJV). This hasn’t changed. If anything, the field is bigger now. There are many people who are starving for answers, but the world reaps the consequences of its choices. The world lusts after spiritual candy instead of bread. The world has welcomed false shepherds into the flock, and now the pasture is barren ground.

Rich in indulgence, but starving for truth.

We are in particularly dark times. Modern life is a culture of soul-sucking indulgence. From the sugary potions we drink to the screens we can’t stop watching; it's all about comfort, convenience, and distraction. Designer brands, body image, social acceptance, technological marvels; these are all part of our modern age of idolatry. Even the infidel can see it; instant gratification and euphoria are erroding the things that are wholesome for our souls.

People live doped-up, entertainment-based lives in which happiness is equated with pleasure. They perceive others as tools for giving them what they want, festering deception, distrust, and betrayal. Many lead selfish and self-absorbed lives, only to believe that they are victims because of the mental anguish of their own self-reflection. A rise in dysfunctional families, broken homes, perversion, and mental illness are all part of the madness of the times.

Many people want answers and meaning in this confusing world, but part of the problem is that there are too many answers, too many contradictions, and too many manipulative people. For many its easier to tune out and indulge in fantasy. For many the search for spiritual answers is a fools errand that leads to nothing valuable.

People look to secular authorities for wisdom and guidance.

Many young people have been inoculated against the spread of Jesus. So now they look to secular gurus, self-helpers, and mental health professionals for guidance. Of course some of these gurus have keen insights into the human mind. They know how we are shaped by our traumas, and prisoners of our habits. Yet they don't recognize the destructive workings of sin in our souls. They don't understand the power of deliverance to break down strongholds and give genuine hope.

God's light shines in the darkness.

But there’s something that gets missed in this lament; the truth holds up under pressure. It survives rejection and distortion. It overcomes propaganda and lies. It doesn’t need diversions or gimmicks. It doesn't need to be sheltered from rational inquiry. It persists regardless of what craziness has taken root in the world. God is the light that shines in the darkness, and by grace we can reflect his light into world, for however long we are given.

The New Testament prophecied these dark and immoral times, but when has there been a golden age? The prophets describe Israel as a nation overrun with sin. They forsook their covenant with God, and chased after pagan idols. They embraced the lies of false prophets and fortune tellers who manipulated them with pleasing words. The nation became a cesspool of injustice, greed, and lust, out of which only a remnant remained.

The world often rejected the shepherds who were sent by God.

There have always been dark times, and God has always brought forth people to confront them. We know some of them now, but they were often ignored, rejected and persecuted. They didn't convert the world, but they helped preserve a pathway of faith within it. Their teachings and testimonies are a gift to us today, and we receive them in a way that's very different from their own generation.

Apologetics is the modern frontline.

Nowadays people are conditioned to ignore emotional appeals. They've been "educated" against traditional creeds. Yes they seek truth, but they're jaded by contradictions and controversies. They want spiritual answers, but they also want to be anchored in fact and reason. Apologetics is at the frontline of this modern struggle.

The world has hurled a flood of lies against the testimony of God. However, their reasoning is vain and their foundation is a rotted pile of lies. Even as Goliath stomped around believing he was invincible, it only took a smooth stone from a David's sling to bring him to a shameful end.
